Real Madrid 1-1 Atléti: Madrid derby ends in a stalemate as Ronaldo scores again
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his 10th consecutive game for Real Madrid as Zinedine Zidane’s side had to settle for a point at home to Atlético Madrid in this afternoon’s capital city derby.
Real Madrid saw 69% of the possession and produced a massive 30 attempts on goal compared to Atlético‘s nine throughout the 90 minutes.
Marco Asensio and Marcelona had both struck the frame of the goal before Cristiano Ronaldo volleyed home from Gareth Bale’s cross on 53 minutes.
It was the Portuguese forward’s 20th goal in his last 10 matches, having scored in every match he has played since turning 33 at the start of February.
However, the home side’s lead lasted less than five minutes as Antoine Griezmann rebounded home after Vitolo saw his effort parried by Keylor Navas.
Ronaldo was surprisingly replaced on 64 minutes with the score at 1-1. Perhaps with the title out of the question, Zinedine Zidane had the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Juventus on Wednesday on his mind, despite coming away from Italy with a 3-0 first leg lead.
Today’s result leaves Atlético Madrid 11 points behind runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona with seven games remaining, meaning the Catalan club only need 10 points from their remaining fixtures to regain the title. Diego Simeone’s side maintain their four point lead over Real Madrid down in third.
