Player Ratings: Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona
FC Barcelona suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in the club’s history on Tuesday night as they threw away a 3-0 first leg lead only to lose 4-0 at Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals.
The English Premier League side were without forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino to make the result look even more dreadful for Ernesto Valverde’s side.
Divock Origi opened the scoring for the hosts after only seven minutes before a quick second half brace from Georginio Wijnaldum was followed up by Origi’s winner 12 minutes from time following some schoolboy defending from the 2018-19 La Liga champions.
Here is how the Barcelona players fared:
Marc-André ter Stegen 4 – Not given much of a chance with the first goal whilst others will feel he should have kept Georginio Wijnaldum’s first goal out, nine minutes into the second half. The Dutch midfielder had a free header for his second and the German goalkeeper was the only player alert for Liverpool’s winner, but didn’t have a chance to stop it. Good reactions to deny Virgil van Dijk shortly after half-time.
Sergi Roberto 3 – Sadio Mané caused the Barcelona right-back problems all night. One positive from Sergi Roberto was to deny the Senegalese a one-on-one opportunity. Liverpool’s third goal came from down this side with Xherdan Shaqiri given space and time to get a cross in on his right foot.
Gerard Piqué 3 – Exposed by the pace of the Liverpool attack and couldn’t keep up with the Premier League side’s onslaught. Has little experience of this in her career to defend the 32-year-old.
Clement Lenglet 3 – No better from the Frenchman who struggled to deal with Divock Origi and co all night. There was some real sloppy defence from the centre-back pairing at Anfield, particularly for the second and fourth goals. Clement Lenglet was a little fortunate not to concede a penalty in the first half.
Jordi Alba 3 – The left-back’s careless mistake helped setup Liverpool’s earlier opener which set the tone of the game. Jordi Alba was denied an equaliser in first half stoppage time which would have made up for his early mistake.
Sergio Busquets 4 – Offered little protection of the back four and although Barcelona had slightly more of the ball, the defending proved to be their undoing. Sergio Busquets was shown a yellow card for a foul on Fabinho shortly before half-time.
Arturo Vidal 3 – Sloppy in possession time and time again which allowed Liverpool to start a number of counter-attacks.
Ivan Rakitić 4 – An uninspiring performance from the experienced midfielder whose careless pass allowed Divock Origi in down the right wing from which he setup Georginio Wijnaldum for Liverpool’s second.
Lionel Messi 7 – Involved in everything good about Barcelona’s attacks but it proved too little. Lionel Messi was involved in all eight of the visitors’ efforts on goal but didn’t cause Alisson too many problems in the Liverpool goal.
Luis Suárez 3 – Wasted a one-on-one early in the second half and didn’t get too involved in the game.
Philippe Coutinho 5 – Could have done better with his opportunity on 16 minutes but otherwise Philippe Coutinho was largely on the fringes of the game before being replaced on the hour.
Nélson Semedo (32 mins) 4 – A defensive change by Ernesto Valverde at 0-3 but it didn’t prove fruitful as Liverpool scored another.
Arthur (17 mins) N/A – Saw a lot of the ball given him limited time on the pitch but Liverpool scored five minutes after Arthur’s introduction and Barcelona created nothing.
Malcom (12 mins) N/A – Barely got a touch of the ball and certainly didn’t do anything of note in the final third.
