Griezmann confirms Atléti departure

Atlético Madrid hitman Antoine Griezmann has confirmed he will be leaving this summer.

The 2018 World Cup winner has posted a two-minute video on his Twitter account to announce the news.

Griezmann is widely-expected to join Barcelona this summer, though neither club have made an announcement as of yet.

The 28-year-old has been with the Spanish capital club since 2014 when he joined from Real Sociedad. His only major honour in five seasons under Diego Simeone was last season’s UEFA Europa League.

Griezmann signed a new contract at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium last summer to fend off potential suitors signing the forward for cheap.

During his five years at Atlético Madrid, Antoine Griezmann has scored 94 goals in 179 La Liga appearances, which included 22 in each of his first two seasons. He also has 27 goals in 56 European appearances; predominantly the Champions League.

Barcelona appears to be Griezmann’s destination and one must think a deal has been made privately for him to make the announcement on his social media account. The Catalan club currently have both Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé as left forwards; Griezmann’s predominant role. However, he can also play in the striker’s role, which is currently occupied by 32-year-old Luis Suárez.
