Real Madrid sign Mendy
Real Madrid have today announced the signing of Ferland Mendy from Olympique Lyonnais.
The left-back has signed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium until 30 June 2025. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. Spanish outlet Marca reported last week that the fee would be €50 million.
Mendy had been a left-back at Lyon for the past two seasons since joining from Le Havre. He regularly impressed as a starter for the Ligue 1 side. The full-back started 27 league games last season, scoring twice and recording one assist. The full-back has four caps for the French national team.
The 24-year-old has pace and loves bombing forward from left-back. He’s not afraid to take on opponents inside their own half either, but his crossing could do with a lot of work. It certainly lacks what Marcelo offers down that flank.
What plans Zinedine Zidane have for the Brazilian remain to be seen. The current Real Madrid left-back only turned 31 last month and has been a regular in their side for the past 12 seasons. Given the defender’s stamina and energy, one would think he has plenty to offer for the foreseeable future.
Ferland Mendy becomes the second defender to sign for Real Madrid this summer, following centre-back Éder Militão’s move from FC Porto.
